Write letters of encouragement

We have contact with dozens of Christian brothers imprisoned in Cairo, and they come from various backgrounds and countries, and are at different stages in their Christian walk. A few were actually imprisoned for evangelizing or sharing their faith, but the majority heard the Gospel in the prison there and accepted Christ. Some have become totally committed to the Lord, are enrolled in bible study courses by correspondence, and minister to other inmates who are sick or needy. Others are new believers who are still learning how to overcome their former way of life. Still others are nominal Christians who in fact have yet to know Jesus Christ personally.

The majority of these brothers are in a prison, which is specifically for foreigners, and as a result, has better living conditions (although as mentioned previously, it is far worse than most prisons in Europe and the United States!). They are able to meet together for worship and bible study, and are able to work at handcrafts to gain some income.

However we also minister to some inmates who are in other prisons, where the conditions are far worse - frequently 100 men in one room with no window, where they must sleep on mats and there is not enough room for all to lie down on the floor at the same time; where they are only allowed out of the cell for one hour each week ; where in some cells there is not even electricity; where often a foreign Christian may be alone in a room with about 100 Muslims, and no-one speaks his language!

Hebrews 13:3 says: "Remember those in prison as if you were their fellow prisoners, and those who are mistreated as if you yourselves were suffering." (NIV Bible)
