TRUE FREEDOM OUTREACHPRISON MINISTRY
THE PRISONERSThe dozens of prisoners that we help are from many different nations around the world including India, Russia, Lebanon, the Philippines, Greece and several countries in Africa. They are all English-speaking and serving long prison terms in Cairo, Egypt. Some were imprisoned as a result of converting from Islam to Christianity, while others were imprisoned for regular crimes but then accepted Christ while in prison.
"B" is from Nigeria; "J" is from India; and "Y" is from Nigeria The prison situation in Egypt is very different from what most of us imagine - the prisoners are provided with no clothes, toiletries or medical help, but must "buy" these, along with any other food to supplement the very meager rations provided! Those who have friends and family near Cairo often receive money or help from them, but the inmates that come from outside Egypt, such as those we are involved with, often have no help whatsoever. We work through a local minister named Father Monir, who visits these brothers weekly, delivering to them mail, food and other necessities as he is able. The brothers spend their days studying the Bible, holding prayer meetings, ministering to other prisoners, and also making beautiful beadwork items by hand or hand decorated greetings cards, which Father Monir takes outside the prison to sell in order to help provide finances for food and other needed items. Most of the brothers also have to pay a fine (usually around $1,700 US) and if it is not paid by their release date they may have to stay in prison for another 5 years! Here is a photo of a sample of the beadwork produced by the prisoners in Egypt Hebrews 13:3 says: "Remember those in prison as if you were their fellow prisoners, and those who are mistreated as if you yourselves were suffering."
HOW YOU CAN GET INVOLVEDWe encourage you to become involved in this important ministry of support and encouragement to our brothers in Egypt. Here are several different ways in which you can help. Click on each heading to learn more exciting details:
We send out monthly updates, via e-mail or regular mail, sharing prisoners needs and prayer requests, new ideas and ways to help, and news of developments. We can also help by answering questions, and sharing information to help bring about better understanding of cross-cultural differences.
THE MINISTRY IN EGYPTOur coworkers in the prison ministry there in Egypt are Fr. Monir Barsome and his wife, Neveen.
